United Kingdom, BPSA
University Research, Community and Hospital.
University: Assisting in lab based research in an academic setting.
Community: Usually dispensing prescriptions, selling over-the-counter medication, and interacting with patients and other healthcare professionals.
Hospital: This will include going around wards shadowing a hospital pharmacist.
All placement programs are only made to SEP students on the day of the exchange within the UK . We generally have more university research placements to offer than community or hospital.
Length of training periods
Usually between 2-4weeks.
An ideal time would be 2 week minimum to allow the student to get the most out of the UK experience
Available months and cities
Placement will be based in major cities in the UK, including London!
(Please note the price of accommodation in London will be very high)
Placements are available in British summer months June -September , however other months are sometimes available on a case to case basis.
Student accommodation at universities, with a host family or hostel(paid by student).
If paid, will range from 100-120 pounds sterling per week. Accommodation in London WILL more expensive.
Also, if you have family or friends that you can visit in the UK ask if you can stay with them. A few students who came to the UK in previous years have stayed with friends and family for free during their placements!
Board, pocket money or other financial benefits/remuneration
The student is required to cover all costs INCLUDING accommodation. Our local representatives will try to find you accommodation for free or at minimum costs.
All incoming students should fluent English.
Previous experience in a pharmacy setting is required by most hosts and they may prefer if you are in your final or pre-final year of study.
You will also be required to obtain a Disclosure Letter from your local authorities i.e. the police demonstrating you have never had a criminal record etc. This is very essential.
You will also be required to complete one of our risk assessment forms before your arrival
Information on Work Permits and Visa
Students coming to the U.K from Countries outside the European Union require a Tourist Visa.
Students will be provided with an invitation letter from our SEO to be taken to the English Embassy in your country describing the reason for travel being an experiential placement. Students won't require working visas: a tourist visa will do just fine.
The main decision is down to the hosts so students should ensure they include all relevant information about why the host should hire them (what they have to offer) in their application forms to be sure to impress the host! Experience + qualification + dedication + English language = a successful application.
