World Polio Campaign:

As part of the WHO Program, IPSF celebrated the World Polio Day this year. WPD was first established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.

Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease that has no cure. The only way to prevent it is by vaccination. Oral polio vaccine (OPV) contains an attenuated (weakened) vaccine-virus, activating an immune response in the body. When a child is immunized with OPV, the weakened vaccine-virus replicates in the intestine for a limited period, thereby developing immunity by building up antibodies. During this time, the vaccine-virus is also excreted. In areas of inadequate sanitation, this excreted vaccine-virus can spread in the immediate community (and this can offer protection to other children through ‘passive’ immunization), before eventually dying out.
Thanks to vaccinations, WHO Pan American Region and WHO European Region are remaining as polio-free.

Phuture: Mental Health

Phuture, the annual scientific publication of IPSF made a release of its 21st Issue on the topic of Mental Health. According to the World Health Organization, one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives, hence pharmacists as the most accessible health care professionals have an important role to play.

This Issue covers interesting topics which highlight the global status of pharmacists in the treatment of mental illness, mental health as everyone's concern, pharmacists' new roles, pharmacists' primary health care roles in the early detection of mental illness, and new theories in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. “International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Regional Conference for the European Region” - Ankara, Turkey

IPSF co-organised the first Health Hackathon during the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Regional Conference for the European Region, held from the 23 My 2019 to 25 May 2019 in Ankara, Turkey.

What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is a “marathon” of hacking where pharmacy students and recent graduates are given a problem statement for them to work in teams, brainstorm and use design-thinking strategies to solve that particular problem. During the Health Hackathon, the participants were asked to come up with solutions on how to implement Electronic Medical Records and use its potential to guarantee patient safety through patient monitoring and medication reconciliation.

This Health Hackathon was conducted successfully, and we hope to continue organising this innovative event in the years to come to equip students with digital skills and prepare them for future technological challenges. It is necessary to provide challenges for students to complement the formal curricula by allowing them to learn through hands-on experience. It was a privilege to work with FIP, FIP Young Pharmacists’ Group and TPA-YC on this cutting-edge initiative!

IPSF also signed the Ankara Commitment to Action on Primary Health Care during the event. (See here)
