Moving On III Migration article published
The Moving On III study, which investigates the migration intentions of pharmacy students and the factors that influence these intentions, has been published.
Tackling the issue of ‘brain drain’ from a fresh perspective, landmark findings of a 9 pilot study on pharmacist migration conducted by IPSF were published in the open access Human Resources for Health Journal on the 6th of April 2009 (http://www.human-resources-health.com/content/7/1/32). The research team was comprised of IPSF Research Coordinators from Australia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Singapore, Croatia, Slovenia, Portugal, Zimbabwe and Egypt who piloted the MO III study and gathered data in 2006. A 75% response was achieved with almost 800 students taking part.
The third in a series of IPSF led global research projects, the Moving On III study aimed to investigate the migration intentions of pharmacy students and the factors that influence these intentions. The study began in 2005 with a workshop held at the IPSF congress in Bonn, Germany. Supported by the School of Pharmacy, University of London and the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the Moving On III Research Team was formed, chaired by Tana Wuliji (IPSF President 2004-2005, Honorary Life Member).
This was the first study to examine the relationships between factors that influence migration and identified the characteristics of groups that were most and least likely to migrate. The study also showed the difference in attitudes between those planning long-term and short-term migration, indicating that short-term migrants hold similar attitudes to those that do not plan to migrate at all.
The Moving On III Research Team is currently working on analyzing the results of a follow up 12 country principal study conducted last year. IPSF Research Coordinators from Nepal, Egypt, Croatia, China, China Taiwan, India, Serbia, Singapore, Finland, South Africa, Rwanda and Zambia successfully gathered 1900 responses from 30 Universities for this final study.
